The police have registered a case against Congress leader and Kovalam MLA M Vincent for abetment of suicide for allegedly harassing a woman.

The woman, 51, a Balaramapuram native, attempted suicide by consuming excess amount of sleeping pills after being harassed by Vincent on numerous occasions, according to the Balaramapuram police.

The woman's husband alleged that the Congress legislator used to call her over phone and harass her repeatedly. She has been admitted to a hospital in Neyyattinkara and is now stable.

Considering the seriousness of the allegation that a sitting MLA has misbehaved with a woman, state police chief Loknath Behera has entrusted Kollam city police commissioner Ajeetha Begum with leading the investigation.

However, Vincent has termed the charges as "baseless" and said he would face the probe. "Charges are without any facts," PTI quoted Vincent as saying.
