A four-year-old Chinese girl has found herself locked up among prisoners at the women's jail in Viyyur near Thrissur, after getting caught up in legal tangles.

The police picked up Han Riu Hou along with her mother Zialoin and uncle Song Qi Hou from an apartment in Kakkanad on July 19 for overstaying their visa period, according to a report in The Hindu.

Zialoin and Song Qi were booked under the provisions of the Foreigners Act and sent to judicial custody. And since Han had no other relative in Kerala and children under five cannot be separated from her mother, the Kakkanad judicial first class magistrate court ordered that she should be sent along with her mother.

Han is currently jailed in cell no.1 along with her mother and four other women. The unfamiliar surroundings, with no other children for company or toys to play with, is causing her major distress.

The court had ordered that Han should be served Chinese cuisine but the jail authorities are finding it difficult to do that. They are able to offer her only what is cooked in the jail for other inmates, along with milk and fruits.

Though a sessions court in Ernakulam granted them bail on Saturday they cannot walk free yet as the offence of overstaying visa period will recur when they step out of jail. Their counsel PK Sajeevan said that a higher judiciary has to intervene to give them freedom, according to the report.
