Whistleblower DIG Roopa conferred Presidents Medal

Former (prisons) DIG D Roopa was conferred the President's Medal by Governor Vajubhai Vala here on Saturday, for exposing alleged irregularities in the Central Jail. Roopa, a whistleblower, had exposed the preferential treatment being extended to AIADMK leader VK Sasikala in the jail through a report to Director General of Prisons in July.

Roopa in her report had alleged that AIADMK leader Sasikala was being extended the VIP treatment in the jail with separate kitchen, barricade and food allotted to her. Not just that she had even alleged that stamp paper kingpin Abdul Karim Lala Telgi too had been given the special treatment by the prison officials.

Her report had attracted nationwide attraction forcing the Siddaramaiah government to order a high-level probe into her claims. While the probe is on, Roopa was shunted out of the prisons department. Besides, many prison officials too were shunted out of prison in a "clean up" act.

Roopa, a native of Davangere had reportedly scored 43rd rank in her UPSC examination in 2000. Reports said that while she served as SP in Madhya Pradesh, Roopa had arrested Uma Bharti, then chief minister of Madhya Pradesh, in a rioting case.

Roopa is now posted as the Deputy Inspector General of Police and Commissioner for Traffic and Road Safety.
