Total Station Survey Rs 28 crore tax evasion by 3 malls Ness Mall tops with Rs 12 cr

The first phase of Total Station Survey of mega buildings in the City by BBMP has been completed. Of the 55 buildings surveyed, hundreds of crores of tax evasion was found. BBMP Tax and Finance Standing Committee president MK Gunashekhar said action has been taken to collect double tax and interest and demand notice has been issued to these defaulters, reports Kannada Prabha.

Speaking at a press meet at the BBMP Central Office on Wednesday, Gunashekhar said there are over 5,000 massive building complexes including 40 malls, 70 tech-parks and housing complexes. Some of the owners of these buildings are cheating BBMP under the self-assessment scheme of property tax. Hence Total Station Survey was conducted on those buildings suspected to have cheated. In the first phase, 55 mega buildings were surveyed and it was found that there were huge gaps between the amount to be paid according to tax survey and tax paid under self-assessment, amounting to hundreds of crores.

Demand notice is being issued to all those owners of mega buildings who have evaded property tax to pay the correct tax with double interest. The Gopalan Mall on Bannerghatta Road owes Rs 5.11 crore, Salarpuria Oasis Mall owes Rs 11.7 crore, Ness Mall owes Rs 11.60 crores. Total Rs 28 crore difference is found and double tax and interest will be collected from them. Demand notice has been issued as on Sept 17 and the mall owners have to respond within 20 days.

Currently, only three building assessment has been completed and the rest 55 buildings will be assessed based on Total Station Survey. The officials have been instructed to survey as per the manual. However, the survey has been conducted only 25 to 30 per cent.

MK Gunashekhar said until now Rs 1,679 crore tax has been collected. Compared to last year, in the current year Rs 300 crore additional tax has been collected. Action has been initiated to collect double tax and interest from the mega buildings who have evaded tax. After Mayoral elections on Sept 28, this process swill be expedited.
