In what was to be a day of celebrating the 70th anniversary of India’s freedom turned into a nightmare for the residents of Namma Bengaluru. Overnight rains battered the city, and the incessant rain clogged storm-water drains and inundated roads.

The rains which started around 10 pm on Monday night continued till early morning on Tuesday. According to Meteorological Centre, Bengaluru, the city received 12.8-centimetre rains till Tuesday morning and in HAL Airport region recorded 14.3 cms rainfall. Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC) recorded the highest rainfall at Bilekahalli, off Bannerghatta Road, which received a rainfall of 18 cms.

Residents of several areas woke up to power cuts and flooded houses. In Jalakanteshwaranagar of Wilson Garden, rain waters entered into more than 50 houses. Rescue boats were pushed into action in the low-lying ST Bed of Koramangala. Several treefalls twisted electric poles and snapped cable lines have also been reported from these areas.

The traffic was brought to a standstill with places like Double Road, Shanti Nagar and Hosur Road seeing massive traffic snarls.

The BBMP was left scrambling after they were flooded with calls from residents. Several residents said that their calls went unanswered.

"As the downpour in just three hours (3 am to 6 am) was so heavy, the storm-water drains could not take the load in such a short time, resulting in rainwater overflowing on several roads and inundating low-lying areas," Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palika (BBMP) Commissioner Manjunatha Prasad said.

In North Bengaluru, the busy Nagawara junction was flooded. Wilson garden and Anepalya in East Bengaluru were in a similar situation. Vehicle users had to navigate through the overflowing drain water in Ulsoor.

The rains also delayed trains since the rail lines were also flooded, leaving several commuters stranded for hours.
