The Hindi beda campaign is starting to assume disastrous proportions as now the language debate is flowing down to jobs as well.

The objections over the language had been raised through an online campaign called Namma Metro Hindi Beda (We don't want Hindi in our Metro), which has questioned the use of Hindi boards along with Kannada boards inside and outside the stations.

According to a report in the Times of India, Kannada Development Authority has now set their sights on those who speak Hindi in the Metro offices - cleaning and security as well.

The report says that KDA Chairman SG Siddaramaiah inspected the Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation(BMRC) office on Tuesday and two days later wrote to CM Siddaramaiah and other Metro officials asking for the BMRC to give priority to Kannadiga in recruitment in the offices at Metro as well.

He is quoted in his letter as saying, "There are seven chief engineers in BMRC who are non-Kannadigas. Karnataka has the highest number of engineering colleges in the country and we have a lot of qualified Kannadigas to do the job. The hiring of so many non-Kannadigas is in ‘violation' of the Sarojini Mahishi report. The government must ensure these (non-Kannadiga) engineers are relieved from their jobs."

He trained his guns on the poor representation of Kannadigas in the cleaning and security department and said that it was against the Sarojini Mahishi report which recommended 100% reservation for Kannadigas in state and public sector units and in some categories in central government departments as well.

So now it comes down to language versus qualification. The KDA chief's assumption is that relieving non-Kannadiga engineers of their jobs and replacing them with Kannada-speaking professionals will do the trick. If his proposal his accepted then it means that all the hardwork and technical know-how of these Chief Engineers comes to naught when it comes to getting a job in Bengaluru. Slowly, this kind of poisonous thinking could subsume other departments as well. It is the government’s job to create jobs for its locals and not snatch someone’s else’s hard-earned job to satisfy their whims. This kind of lopsided parenting will only lead to greedy, lazy and demanding children.
