Is Namma Metro's extended timings helping tipplers?

  • On Friday, a drunk passenger threw up inside the coach causing nuisance to fellow passengers
  • Metro does not have a facility to clean the coach in between the routes
  • Although, Metro Rule prohibits drunk passengers from boarding the train, the ground staff are reportedly helpless in ensuring the rule
Is Metros extended timings helping tipplers

Bengaulreans working on late night-shifts were rejoiced when the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (BMRCL) announced its extended train timings till 11 pm. But this has turned out to be more beneficial for tipplers at the cost of other passengers, as an incident on the Metro purple line reported on Friday.

A picture of passenger throwing up in the Metro coach while fellow passengers trying to save themselves from the nightmare has gone viral since then. Apparently, the passenger was drunk and worst, there was little that the Metro staff could do anything about it, reports Deccan Herald.

For, there is no way that the coach could be cleaned till it reached the last destination and one could imagine the horrible plight that the passengers were  put through.

Since the Metro timings are extended, passengers who are drunk have found it an easy way to travel. It is reported that the drunk commuters do not listen to the Metro staff who stop them from boarding the train. "They argue that they are not using the service for free and tell us to back off. We advise them for their own good and  because we know how tough it is to clean up the mess they leave behind," reports Deccan Herald, quoting a Metro staffer.

On Friday, after a passenger threw up near Central College Station, passengers moved to the last coach unable to bear the foul smell. The Metro staff could not clear the mess as - clearly - there was no option with them. The passengers had to put up with the mess till the train reached the last station, Nayandahalli which is a 30-minute ride.

This was brought to the notice of Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation (BMRCL) and BMRCL spokesperson UA Vasanth Rao stated that they will work out a solution to tackle such issues in future. It is reported that Metro Act and Rules clearly prohibit entry of drunk commuters. But the onus is on the authorities to help the ground staff to deal effectively with such passengers.
