Techies and frequent fliers, residing in the eastern and southern part of Bangalore can finally reach their destination in 30 minutes.  Once the Center gives a nod, the next clearance for operationalisation has to come from the Ministry of Defence as the airspace is maintained by the HAL ATC. Under the Centre's Ude Desh Ka Aam Naagrik (UDAN), the Tamil Nadu government signed a memorandum of understanding with the Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA) to start low-cost air services from Hosur Airport.

We had carried out reports pertaining to the plan of the Karnataka government establishing a separate functional airport for the citizens residing in the eastern part of the city. The happiness of the citizens sees no bound as the dream project has finally taken shape, barring a few regulatory nods. All that now remains is HAL's nod as it controls the airspace, which is just a matter of time since the Center has already given its nod to the project.

Techies and frequent fliers, residing in the eastern and southern part of Bangalore can finally reach their destination in 30 minutes. The Hosur airport, located at the Belagondapalli village, Thally Road is around 35 km from the Electronic City, which is far less than the 85 km that fliers had to travel to reach the Kempegowda airport, a 2-hour ride, forget the Rs 1,500 that commuters have to pay to taxis.

RV Deshpande, Industries and Infrastructure Minister, speaking to the Bangalore Mirror said, "The BIAL board has already given the green signal for the Hosur airport to start commercial flights as a no-objection certificate in this regard has been issued." Once the Center gives a nod, the next clearance for operationalisation has to come from the Ministry of Defence as the airspace is maintained by the HAL ATC. According to an AAI official, "As HAL comes under the Ministry of Defence, it has to take a final call as its airspace cannot be infringed. Another NOC has to be obtained for the Hosur airport to start commercial flights."

Under the Centre's Ude Desh Ka Aam Naagrik (UDAN), the Tamil Nadu government signed a memorandum of understanding with the Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA) to start low-cost air services from Hosur Airport. Amid speculations whether the airport will be able to operate commercial flights,  the Ministry of Civil Aviation and BIAL signed on the dotted line in 2004, agreeing no new or existing airport (except for Mysore and Hassan airports) shall be permitted by GoI to be developed as, or improved or upgraded into, a domestic airport within an aerial distance of 150 km of the airport before the 25th anniversary of the airport opening date”.

The Hosur airport is maintained by Taneja Aerospace and Aviation Ltd (TAAL) and is capable of handling Airbus A320s and Boeing 737s. However, its hangers are capable of handling only narrow body aircraft as of now. The airport is spread over 248 acres and the runway length is 2168 m visa vie the KIA runway, which is 4,000 m long. However, it is said that the runway length of 2,000 m is more than adequate for most commercial airlines, except for the wide-bodied one.

The TAAL airfield is usually used for chartered flights, but of late it can also be seen harbouring aircraft of Drukair (from Bhutan), Maldivian Airlines and Boliviana de Aviacion (Bolivia’s national airline).
