With news of Prime Minister Narendra Modi visiting Karnataka to kick off the election campaign, BJP party president Amit Shah has instructed that BJP flag must be hoisted at all booth level and it must not be brought down until the elections are over.
However, a few pro-Kannada and anti-BJP Facebook groups have twisted this message to further their own agenda.
The Facebook page Samanya Kannadiga has called Amit Shah a traitor against Karnataka and Kannada. While Amit Shah had said that the BJP flag will be hoisted along with the Karnataka flag, the group has claimed that Amit Shah asked the party members to not hoist the red and yellow flag of the state and raise the BJP flag only.
The group also used a sentence that was flashed on a television news channel to mislead its readers into believing that Amit Shah was trying to insult the Karnataka flag.
The page went on to dare the BJP party president to lower the Karnataka flag. The post also tried to rile up the sentiments of the readers by telling them that BJP will erase any trace of Kannada from Karnataka.
It asks Kannadigas to not lose their self-respect while again directing their fury against Amit Shah saying that he should not play with the sentiments of the Kannadigas.
This is purely a case of a statement being taken out of context to mislead people for a few likes on the page.
While Amit Shah has made it very clear that the BJP flag with be raised along with Karnataka’s flag, the page misconstrued his statement and made it look like he was trying to insult Kannadigas.
Amit Shah said that hoisting the BJP flag will help to organise the workers for a better campaign but never spoke of lowering the Karnataka flag.
