DGP Dutta unhappy over acquittal of criminal cases for lack of evidence

The Director General of Police (DGP) RK Dutta said he was unhappy over the increasing number of criminal cases being acquitted due to lack of evidences in the court. Angered at this, he has now sought details from the police personnel on their lapses in investigation of criminal cases, reports Kannada Prabha.

According to Dutta the negligence by police officials in gathering collective circumstantial evidences after crime occurs and their failure to record statements of the accused during interrogation are being led to the acquittal of the criminals in the court. The enthusiasm shown by officials at the time of crime finding eventually diminishes by the time the case comes up for hearing. This helps the accused to escape the sentence. The fact that accused in serious crimes like murder and rape are being acquitted due to lack of evidence by the police and this questions the efficiency of the police, he observed. He asked the officers collect information from investigating officials and submit a report in this regard.

Earlier, DGP Dutta had instructed to adopt stricter investigation processes and patrolling in the City. Now, he has called a meeting of the higher officials in the grade of IGP, and Commissioners to chalk out the measure. The senior officers must be in touch with the public prosecutor and get details at every stage. This will enable the police to produce evidences to prove the crime in the court, reports Kannada Prabha. 

Meanwhile, the High Court has dismissed the death penalty to the Dandupalya gang members Dodda Hanuma, Venkatesh and Nalla Timma, accused of killing one Sushila in Mysuru and instead awarded life term of 10 years. This is the 6th case in which the five members of the Dandu Palya gang have escaped the death penalty.
