The unexpected rainfall that lashed South and West Bengaluru areas is a record rainfall received in 24 hours! The torrential showers which began from Monday late night pounded the city for nearly five hours leaving many areas marooned. With Bilekahalli in Bengaluru South receiving 17.5 cm rainfall, the City clocked the highest rainfall in 24 hours in 127 years. In 1890 August, the City had received 16 cm rainfall in 24 hours, reports Kannada Prabha quoting Meteorological Department and Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC).

The average rainfall the city received between August 14 and August 15, 2017 is recorded at 14 cm. Majority of the areas in the city have received more than 50 mm as the rain continue to lash till Tuesday morning. While Bilekahalli has registered 175 mm rainfall, Bommanahalli has received 158 mm, Lakkasandra 125 mm and Rajamahal Guttahalli 130 mm.

At Shivananda Circle, Shivani hotel - one of the landmarks in the junction - has completely submerged. With water clogging up till Majestic, vehicle users had a harrowing time. Even residents in well-planned areas like Koramanagala, Whitefield, HSR Layout too braved the rain with most of the houses in the low-lying area marooned. Besides, areas in Majestic, KG Road, Goodshed Road, MG Road, Shivajinagar, Kaval Bhairasandra, Benson Town, KR Market, Kengeri and Deepanjali Nagar were flooded with no proper drainage for the water to flow. Trees were uprooted in many areas and the drains were flowing full in low-lying areas.

At Anugraha layout, residents are struggling to flush out the drain water that had entered their houses as the strom water drain in the area is flowing full. In fact the work on this storm water drain has come to a halt after people brought a stay order on the works from the court. "This has left us helpless and now people are cursing the BBMP for its inaction," reports Kannada Prabha, quoting BBMP chief engineer Siddegowda.

NDRF personnel had to use the boat to rescue residents in some of the areas. The City is expected to receive rainfall for three more days, reports Kannada Prabha quoting IMD officer Sundar Metri.

It is reported that the sudden and heavy showers were a result of cyclonic trough caused in the Bay of Bengal.
