The Karnataka state cabinet has a proposal to impose toll fee on 19 state highways that cover 1,530 km. These highways have been developed under Karnataka State Highways Improvement Project (KSHIP) with aid from World Bank, and the execution was done by Karnataka Road Development Corporation Ltd (KRDCL).

According to reports, the toll will be levied on 16 KSHIP and 3 KRDCL road users.

The New Indian Express quoted a senior state government minister as saying that levying toll is inevitable due to the construction and maintenance cost of the highways.

Collecting toll on state highways is likely to impact the overall population of the state. Transport operator may increase fares sighting the toll fee that may affect state tourism, and commercial vehicles may also increase their fee which may also lead to a surge in the cost of essential commodities.
