A Google software engineer, Harshit Sharma, has gone viral after announcing his resignation on LinkedIn. He shared his decision to leave the high-paying job to escape the "rat race" and embark on a one-year journey of self-discovery. His post resonated with many, sparking conversations about career choices and personal fulfillment.
A Google software engineer's LinkedIn post went viral when he openly announced his plan to leave a steady, high-paying career to explore life outside of the rat race. Harshit Sharma, who had worked at Google for two years, announced his resignation, calling the decision "bittersweet." His post, which has now gone viral, highlights an increasing trend among young professionals who choose meaning above regularity.

“I quit Google. And it is bittersweet,” he wrote. “Bitter because: I will miss my people. The table tennis, the card games, the fun Fridays. Some of the kindest and most fun humans I've ever known.”
However, for Harshit, the "sweet" portion trumps the rest. "Now I am free!" he exclaimed, recounting how he had spent years pursuing a traditional route. “All my life, I've followed the script: do the maths. Study engineering. Get that technical job. Make money. Earn validation.” Describing himself as “a robot following a line,” he said it was time for a change. “Every good story needs a twist. And this bot is taking a detour.”
Harshit revealed that he had accumulated enough money over four years to feed himself and had lengthy negotiations with his parents before reaching a compromise, "1 year of experimentation." If he is unable to translate his hobbies into a sustainable job within that time frame, he intends to return to technology.
For now, he’s embracing the unknown. “Sleep with no concrete schedule, travel, learn various art forms, meet new people, gain new perspectives,” he wrote, listing the experiences he hopes to pursue.

His closing line perhaps resonated the most: “The mask falls here. The performance ends. The search for a truer me begins.”
Social Media Reactions
The post has received several responses from LinkedIn members. While several commented on how taking a leap of faith demonstrates a person's fortitude, others pointed out that pursuing one's passion is far superior to working a 9-5 job.
The post struck a chord online, with many users praising his decision to step away from the so-called “rat race”.
One user wrote, “It takes lot of courage to take this step so hats off to you. Wishing you all the luck in journey ahead.”
“Whoever has the luxury for such breaks, honestly take it and explore life. Lot of these experiments don’t end up in finding anything significant but even if you are one of those rare few who happen to find themselves in this detour, it’s worth a shot,” commented another.
