Vessel carrying trucks drown in West Bengal's Malda district; 10 missing

At least ten people went missing on Monday (November 23) when a vessel carrying several trucks drowned in Malda district of West Bengal. Several who knew how to swim came to the banks, but several drivers and helpers are missing.

Nine lorries fell into the Ganga river from a Roll On Roll Off (RORO) vessel after it developed a snag while coming from Jharkhand to Manichak in Malda district of West Bengal on Monday (November 23) evening. According to reports, at least ten people went missing after the incident.

Several who knew how to swim came to the banks, but several drivers and helpers are missing.

A rescue operation has been initiated to find the missing. The District Magistrate (DM) and Superintendent of Police (SP) Malda have rushed to the spot for inquiries and helping with rescue operations.

A team of the disaster management department from Raiganj in Uttar Dinajpur district has reached Manikchak.

An official said, “The lorries laden with stone chips slid into the Ganga after the RORO vessel run by a Jharkhand-based operator developed some mechanical snag while coming from Sahebganj side to Manikchak.”

However, there is no report yet of any passenger being harmed, and some drivers and cleaners of the stonechips- carrying lorries have swam to safety.
