Tripura's Health & Family Welfare Department has detailed significant progress in the healthcare sector under the 'Niramay Arogya Initiatives', including infrastructure expansion, new medical colleges, and a historic low in Infant Mortality Rate.

The Health & Family Welfare Department, Government of Tripura, has highlighted the remarkable journey and achievements under the "Niramay Arogya Initiatives in Tripura (2022-2026)", stating that healthcare remains one of the highest priorities of the government.

According to a release issued by the department, guided by the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi for "Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas, Sabka Prayas," the department has undertaken several transformative initiatives to strengthen healthcare infrastructure and service delivery across Tripura.

The release stated that during the last four years, the state has witnessed significant progress through expansion of medical infrastructure, modernisation of hospitals, strengthening of primary healthcare services, enhancement of diagnostic and emergency care facilities, and implementation of people-centric schemes.

It added that recently, Tripura University of Health Sciences has been notified to streamline medical education. The release further mentioned that the establishment of a large number of institutions, even in the private sector, upgradation of District Hospitals, Sub-Divisional Hospitals, Trauma Care Centres, Oxygen Plants, enhancement of ambulance services, strengthening of Tripura Health Assurance Scheme for the Poor (THAPS) and expansion of healthcare manpower are commendable milestones.

Chief Minister Manik Saha said, "Healthcare remains one of the highest priorities of our government. I appreciate the dedicated efforts of doctors, nurses, paramedical staff, ASHA workers, health officials, and all frontline healthcare workers whose tireless service has significantly contributed to strengthening the healthcare system in Tripura. I extend my best wishes to everyone associated with this initiative and reaffirm the Government's commitment to building a healthy and prosperous Tripura."

Key Achievements and Milestones

The release said the successful implementation of programmes relating to antenatal and postnatal care, child immunisation, nutrition management and promotion of institutional deliveries has contributed significantly towards reducing infant and child mortality.

It added that a landmark achievement was reflected in the Sample Registration System (SRS) Bulletin published by the Registrar General of India in September 2025, which reported the Infant Mortality Rate (IMR) of Tripura at 15 per 1,000 live births - the lowest ever recorded in the history of the state.

The release quoted Kiran Gitte, Secretary to the Chief Minister, saying, "This remarkable progress stands as a testament to the dedicated efforts of the Government and healthcare workforce."

According to the release, the effective convergence of Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY) and the Chief Minister Jan Arogya Yojana, 2023 has further strengthened access to free and affordable healthcare services, benefiting thousands of citizens every day.

The release stated that as a result of continuous initiatives, complex surgeries such as kidney transplants have become possible in the state.

Collaboration with AIIMS for Medical Excellence

It said a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed between the Health & Family Welfare Department and AIIMS, New Delhi, for developing Medical Colleges & Hospitals in Tripura into centres of excellence in medical education and super-speciality healthcare, aligning with international standards.

The government envisions transforming AGMC & GBP Hospital into a medical hub modelled on the excellence of AIIMS, New Delhi.

According to the release, a meeting was held on June 9, 2025, between the Chief Minister and a delegation from AIIMS, New Delhi, led by Prof. (Dr.) M. Srinivas, focusing on improving healthcare services and medical education at AGMC and GBP Hospital, and AIIMS has already arranged training programmes for doctors, nurses and lab technicians of Tripura.

New Government Dental College

The release also highlighted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Agartala Government Dental College on December 18, 2022, marking a major milestone. Located within the IGM Hospital complex, it is the state's first Government Dental College.

The institution was established in 2023 and started functioning from the academic session 2023-24 with 50 BDS students, now increased to 63 seats. Construction work for the new building and hostels is underway at a cost of Rs 202 crore with financial support from the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region. Laser Treatment, 3D Printing Labs and TENS Therapy for Orofacial Pain Management have been introduced, the release said.

Expanding Health Services

It further stated that dedicated centres for alternative medicine are being developed, including a Homoeopathy College at Renters Colony and an Ayurvedic College at Tepania, while programmes like Mukhyamantri Sustha Shaishab Sustha Koishor Abhiyaan, Mukhyamantri Niramay Arogya Abhiyan and Rashtriya Bal Swasthya Karyakram are playing a crucial role in securing a healthier future for children and adolescents.

Infrastructure and Outreach Expansion

Giving details of health infrastructure growth since 1972, the release said Medical Colleges increased from 2 in 2022-23 to 4 in 2025-26, Sub-divisional Hospitals from 12 to 15, PHCs including Urban PHCs from 118 to 122, Sub-Centres from 999 to 1018, OST Centers from 16 to 52, and FICTCs from 133 to 142.

The release added that the state has conducted 1034 health camps by Medical Officers covering 74,337 clients and 191 health camps by Specialist Medical Officers covering 65,871 clients, as part of its outreach. (ANI)
