Kolkata: Rumours have spread that Sourav Ganguly is gradually approaching the arena of politics. Several incidents that took place recently has raised the thought that the BCCI president might include his name in politics. But Sourav Ganguly has not paid any heed to such rumours. He clearly mentioned that he is staying away from politics.

Though Sourav has successfully handled the role of administrator of Indian cricket from CAB (Cricket Association of Bengal), the Maharaja of Bengal has never expressed his thoughts on entering politics. But in the events of the last few months, the speculation of Sourav's entry into politics is gradually gaining momentum. Sourav Ganguly visited Nabanna in July and met the chief minister of West Bengal. But the reason for that meeting was not known then. Even after the reason for the meeting was revealed later, the question still remains in the minds of people on whether Sourav Ganguly is going to join the BJP soon.

According to sources, the BCCI president had gone to Nabanna in July to meet the chief minister to discuss the return of land from the state government. Sourav received 2 acres of land from the Trinamool government to build a school approved by the ICSE board in Newtown. Sourav had to face a lawsuit over the issue of the land which was given by the state government. There were multiple problems he faced after he received the land. Therefore, he decided to return the 2 acres of land to the state government.

But there has been a lot of speculation in the political arena about why Sourav suddenly returned the land to the government. Many believe that Sourav paved the way for him to join the BJP before the state Assembly elections in 2021. There is a huge tussle between political parties over getting Sourav Ganguly in their respective party. However, the return of the state government's land by Sourav is considered to be a step taken to join the BJP.

The rumour of Sourav possibly joining the BJP is not new. On July 7, the day of Sourav's birthday, the speculation was sparked by Dona Ganguly, his wife. In an interview, Dona said, ‘’If Sourav enters the world of politics, he will reach the top there too. It is unknown at this moment of what he will do after leaving the post. But no matter what pitch he plays, he will be at the top. Starting from the very beginning, he has been the best in what he does.’’

This time the return of the land received from the state government has created a new stir in the political arena. Everyone knows about the brother-sister relationship of Sourav Ganguly with the chief minister of state Mamata Banerjee. But the question still remains as to why Sourav returned the land after meeting the chief minister?

On the other hand, in the last few years, relations with the BJP government at the Centre have improved. It is known that Sourav Ganguly became the BCCI president overnight with the intervention of Union minister Amit Shah. The BJP has been trying hard for a long time to make Sourav Ganguly active in parliamentary politics. There are rumours that in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, Sourav was offered to be the Union sports minister, but he did not agree with the proposal.

There are rumours that Sourav Ganguly will be the face of the state BJP in the 2021 Assembly elections. Although Sourav himself has not yet said anything about joining politics, people are guessing that Sourav Ganguly might join hands with the BJP in 2021.
