"We were tipped off that rumours regarding crimes were being spread on three WhatsApp groups, which have the potential to disrupt peace in the city. Police issued notices against six persons, including three group admins in connection to spreading false information," Additional SP (Crime Branch) Vinayprakash Paul told PTI.

"Through these notices, we have asked them that why action should not be taken against them in such a sensitive matter," he said.

Paul informed that in one of the groups, a dispute between two women was termed as "deadly attack" and the message went viral. Similarly, rumours were spread about the crime in two other groups.

The ASP said that in the last one year, police had taken legal action against 92 persons, who have spread rumours on social media regarding crime, including those who have tried to spread communal hatred to disrupt peace in the city.
