Kozhikode: A Maoist leader was arrested by the Pantheerankavu police on Tuesday from a migrant labourer's camp. Ajay Oron, a native of Jharkhand had been residing in the camp for the past one and a half months.

Oron, a leader of the People's Liberation Front of India (PLFI), was arrested after a request by the Jharkhand police. He will soon be taken to Jharkhand after station formalities in Kozhikode. 

According to the police, Oron was earlier sentenced to 11 years in jail in a case under the Arms Act. He has visited Kerala four times since 2019.
Kerala's northern districts of Kannur, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Palakkad, and Malappuram have had overt and covert Maoist activity over the past few years. Wayanad, Malappuram, and Palakkad were added to the Center's list of 90 districts nationwide that are impacted by left-wing extremism (LWE) in 2018.

The People's Liberation Front of India (PLFI) is a Maoist militant group that was founded in Jharkhand in 2007. Formerly known as the Jharkhand Liberation Tigers (JLT), it was established in 2003 by Dinesh Gope, a resident of the Jharkhand region of Khunti.
