Kerala BJP President K Surendran has said that the Bharatiya Janata Party does not have any link in the Kodakara robbery case in which 13 people have been arrested so far.

Surendran's claim comes against the backdrop of police already planning to get a statement from him on the issue.

The police have already questioned BJP leaders in the case.

"What we are seeing is the false campaigning unleashed against the party by a section of CPM and the media," he said, addressing the media on Thursday.

"The party is not engaged in any money dealings, and a smokescreen is being created to trap the party. Many of the leaders are being called for interrogation giving no reasons at all. Many have appeared for interrogation and have not moved the court or feigned sick. I do not know if the money seized in Kodakara is black money or white money," Surendran said.

The Kodakara case came to light on April 7 when Kozhikode native Shamjeer Shamsudin lodged a robbery complaint in which he claimed that three days before the assembly election, nine men in two vehicles robbed him on the Thrissur-Ernakulam highway. Shamsudin initially claimed that Rs 25 lakh, which was related to a real estate deal, had been robbed.

During the course of the investigation, the police found that the amount stolen was, in fact, over Rs 3.5 crore. A Special Investigation Team took over the probe thereafter. Various media reports have cited police sources as saying that the cash that was being moved was meant for BJP's election expenses and that local BJP leaders themselves were part of the conspiracy.
