Pakistan army chief General Asim Munir has been reportedly removed from his post and arrested under dramatic circumstances, according to reports.
Tensions between India and Pakistan have reportedly escalated to alarming levels, with the Indian Army delivering a strong response to Pakistan's drone and missile attacks on Thursday night.
Amid the chaos, Pakistan army chief General Asim Munir has been reportedly removed from his post and arrested under dramatic circumstances, according to reports.
General Sahir Shamshad Mirza, the current Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee, is claimed to have taken over the reins of the Pakistan Army.
Reports suggest that General Munir stands accused of steering the country into chaos and strategic decline in pursuit of personal ambitions. While official confirmation from the Pakistani military is still awaited, reports claim that a faction within the top brass had long grown disillusioned with Munir’s leadership and blamed him for exacerbating internal instability and diplomatic failures.
It is no coincidence that Asim Munir was the head of the notorious Pakistani spy agency, the Inter-Services Intelligence or the ISI, when it orchestrated the vicious Pulwama terror attack that saw the deaths of 40 personnel of the Central Reserve Police Force on February 14, 2019.
Six years on, Munir, now de facto supremo of Pakistan, is once again in India’s crosshairs as the alleged mastermind of the Pahalgam terror attack in which 25 tourists and one local were gunned down in Kashmir’s alpine haven on April 22.
India-Pak tensions escalate
India on Thursday night swiftly thwarted Pakistan's fresh attempts to strike military sites with drones and missiles including in Jammu and Pathankot. The incident marks a sharp escalation in ongoing tensions following India’s Operation Sindoor, which targeted terror infrastructure in Pakistan in response to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack that killed 26 people, mostly tourists.
