BJP workers protest in Singur after former TMC MLA Rabindranath Bhattacharya announced as party candidate
BJP supporters at Singur staged a protest after former TMC leader Rabindranath Bhattacharya was given ticket from the Singur constituency for the upcoming polls.
The BJP on Sunday (March 14) declared its list of 27 candidates for the third phase of the West Bengal assembly elections. Among the names on this list was Rabindranath Bhattacharya, who will be contesting on a BJP ticket from Singur.
Rabindranath Bhattacharya, a veteran leader of the Singur land protection movement, joined the BJP a few days ago as he did not get a TMC ticket. He had a long feud with Becharam Manna, another leader of the Singur movement.
Abhishek Lahiri claimed that the central leaders did favouritism by giving the Rabindranath Bhattacharya the ticket to fight the polls.
Chanting slogans against the veteran politician, a section of BJP supporters also locked up a Madhya Pradesh minister who visited Singur for a poll campaign.
BJP leaders claimed that local MP Locket Chatterjee had sold tickets to Becharam with money. With that, they said, “We have raised the team in Singur like a child. Now that the party is about to come to power, the party has sold tickets to Becharam.”
The road was blocked due to the protest. Upon receiving the news, the police came and removed the BJP workers. However, they did not back down from their demands. The protesters demanded that the party's state leadership should change its candidate in Singur at any cost.
