There seems to be no end of frustrations for Indian football giant, East Bengal, as its wait for its maiden win in the Indian Super League (ISL) 2020-21 continues after a 2-2 draw against former champion, Chennaiyin FC, at the Tilak Maidan in Goa, on Saturday. The draw compelled EB to stay on 10th, while Chennayin rose to the seventh spot.
The opening half was off to an attacking start, with the first attack of the game coming in the fourth minute, from Chennaiyin. Nonetheless, it was ahead eight minutes later, as Lallianzuala Chhangte scored with his left-footed shot to the bottom-left corner from the left flank, following an assist from Jakub Sylvestr.
The rest of the half was competitive, with just four more attacks coming up, while EB came up with only an attack in the half, only to be saved by Chennayin goalkeeper, Vishal Kaith. Nonetheless, Channiyin managed to hold on to its lead at the half-time break.
The second half saw three attacks until the 57th minute, including a save from Chennaiyin from EB keeper, Debjit Majumder. The very next minute, Matti Steinmann pulled one back for EB, with his header to the top-left corner, six yards from the right, as Bikash Jairu came up with the assist.
However, it saw an attempt from Chennaiyin the very next minute, only to for Rahim Ali to restore the lead three minutes later, through his right-footed strike to the centre from the right, following another assist from Sylvestr. Three more attempts followed it until the 67th minute, which saw another save from the Chaennaiyin keeper.
However, the very minute also saw EB level it again, courtesy Steinmann's right-footed shot to the bottom-right in a close-range effort, through a corner. It was then followed by nine more attempts, including another save by the EB keeper, but to no avail, as both the teams could not break the deadlock thereon and the honours were shared at the full-time whistle.
