Mark Zuckerberg's 440-Acre Irish Castle Has A Dark History

Mark Zuckerberg has reportedly expanded his luxury property portfolio with the purchase of Strancally Castle, a sprawling 440-acre estate in County Waterford, Ireland. The Meta CEO is believed to have paid between €20 million and €30 million for the historic property.

The grand estate combines centuries of Irish history with Gothic Revival architecture, extensive grounds and a picturesque location overlooking the River Blackwater. But behind its fairytale appearance is a chilling local legend involving an alleged "murder hole".

Strancally Castle has long been associated with a disturbing tale about a device allegedly used to trap and kill unsuspecting visitors.

Author William Howitt documented the story in his 1847 book, Homes and Haunts of the Most Eminent British Poets. While describing the remains of an earlier castle at Strancally, Howitt referred to what was believed to be a "murderous device" connected to the stronghold.

According to the account, a large opening had been cut into the rock beneath the castle and was believed to connect with the River Blackwater. Local folklore claimed that unsuspecting people were lured inside the castle, tied up and lowered through the opening before the river carried them away.

However, the account came with an important caveat. Howitt himself appeared doubtful about the story and suggested that it was likely a local legend rather than a verified historical event.

The alleged murder hole has nevertheless remained part of Strancally Castle's fascinating folklore, giving the historic property an unusual and mysterious past.

Inside Mark Zuckerberg's New Irish Castle

The present Strancally Castle was built between 1827 and 1830 for John Keily, a former Tory MP. Architects James and George Richard Pain were responsible for designing the Gothic Revival mansion.

Located in County Waterford, around 150 kilometres southwest of Dublin, the three-storey property reportedly has 11 bedrooms.

The castle is said to feature a marble fireplace and a cantilevered staircase, while its exterior is characterised by Gothic-style windows and traditional cut-stone construction.

Its location adds considerably to its appeal. The castle sits high on a bend of the River Blackwater and is surrounded by expansive lawns, mature trees and hundreds of acres of land.

The combination of historic architecture, secluded grounds and its riverside setting gives Strancally Castle the appearance of a real-life fairytale estate.

Who Owned Strancally Castle Before Mark Zuckerberg?

Before Zuckerberg's reported purchase, Strancally Castle was owned by Michael Alen Buckley and his wife, Giancarla Alen-Buckley.

The couple acquired the estate around 25 years ago and played a role in restoring and preserving the historic property.

Michael Alen Buckley is known for helping establish London-based investment firm RAB Capital. After more than two decades at Strancally, the Alen Buckley family is now leaving the estate.

A spokesperson for the family said they were leaving their home of 25 years fondly and remained grateful for the opportunity to preserve and restore Strancally Castle.

The family also expressed happiness that Zuckerberg and his family intended to continue investing in the property, including maintaining and enhancing the castle and its surrounding grounds in a sustainable manner.

They wished Zuckerberg and his family happiness at the historic estate.

Why Is Mark Zuckerberg Buying Property In Ireland?

Zuckerberg and his family are reportedly expected to continue spending most of their time at their primary residence in the United States.

Strancally Castle is instead expected to serve as a residence during their visits to Ireland.

The purchase also has a connection to Zuckerberg's business interests. Meta has its European headquarters in Ireland, making the country an important location for the technology company.

The castle could therefore provide the billionaire and his family with a private retreat while they are in the country.

Mark Zuckerberg's Growing Property Portfolio

The purchase of Strancally Castle adds another extraordinary property to Zuckerberg's real estate portfolio.

Unlike a conventional luxury home, the Irish estate offers a combination of historic significance, extensive land and Gothic architecture. Its 440-acre grounds also make it one of the more distinctive properties associated with the Meta CEO.

The castle's alleged murder-hole story, meanwhile, adds another layer of intrigue to the purchase. While there is no certainty that the grisly tale actually happened, it has survived for generations as part of the area's folklore.
