Following his dismissal, social media blamed Anushka for him underperforming, labelling her as a distraction. Nonetheless, Kohli protected her and shut the critics and trollers down, by saying, "The stuff that happened after the World Cup semi-final, the way people reacted towards my personal life and Anushka in particular, was really disrespectful. I want to put this out in public because at the human level, I was really hurt and wanted to express that for quite a long time." Meanwhile, Anushka referred to him as, "He's my very, very good looking arm candy."

Although many of their Indian friends were denied the fun during their wedding, both gave away big reception parties in Delhi and Mumbai to make it up for it.
