Udta Punjab: Court may release film with only one cut

Udta punjab high court bomby order cuts

Anurag Kashyap's Udta Punjab may actually hit the theatres on June 17Ā with just one cut, out of the 13 suggested by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), the Bombay High Court indicated on Friday.

Ā

The court has reserved its final judgement for June 13. During the arbitration, Judges SC Dharmadhikari and Shalini Phansalkar-Joshi told the CBFC counsel that ā€œmultiplex audiences are mature enough and people should be allowed to see the film as everybody has a choice."Ā

Ā

The court also told the CBFC counsel that their actions was giving "unnecessary" publicity to the film. The court also snubbedĀ CBFC over itsĀ attempts to snip expletives from the final version of the movie. Ā

Ā

"Today's generation is very direct open and more mature. No film runs because of the use of cuss words... Let the public decide whether they want to see the movie or not. Use of expletives will not take the movie anywhere. Today's generation is not going to be impressed with all this," the judges said.

Ā

The court, however, has asked theĀ filmmakers to cut a scene in whichĀ Shahid Kapoor is seenĀ urinating on a stage in front of a crowd. Ā

Ā

The counsel for Phantom Films, producers of Udta Punjab, have told the court that they are ready toĀ insert disclaimers in the film saying they did not intend to portray any state in bad light, including inĀ scenes that featured expletives in the dialogue, saying they didn't support the use of cuss words.
