Independence Day: Shershaah to Chak De! to URI, 9 movies that rekindle the patriot within you

It is exceptional when the Indian tricolour is hoisted or the national anthem is played publicly. The enormous joy and happiness that one derives from the fact that our nation has conquered yet another feat unites a diverse India. 15th August is around the corner, and we are all making plans to spend this day celebrating our country’s freedom. 

Here we have a list of films based on the courage and achievement of men and women in uniform, whether on the battlefield or in sports, bringing honour to our nation. 

Shershaah: The latest release on Amazon Prime Video is a biographical war film tracing the journey of Param Vir Chakra awardee and Army captain Vikram Batra. The movie has received love and applause from audiences and film critics. Director by Vishnuvaradhan, Shershaah features Sidharth Malhotra and Kiara Advani in pivotal roles. 

Bhuj: The Pride of India features Ajay Devgn, Sanjay Dutt, Sonakshi Sinha, Nora Fatehi and Sharad Kelkar in the leading roles. The film is set during the India-Pakistan war in 1971 and orbits around the life of IAF squadron leader Vijay Karnik, in charge of the Bhuj airport. You can watch the film on Disney+Hotstar.

The Ghazi Attack: The film is directed by Sankalp Reddy; the movie credits the Indian Navy for its accomplishments during the Indo-Pak war in 1971. The Ghazi Attack is inspired by actual events, the mysterious sinking of the submarine PNS Ghazi. Indian officers on board submarine INS Karanj destroyed the Pakistani submarine when it was headed to destroy INS Vikrant. The film stars Rana Daggubati, Atul Kulkarni, Kay Kay Menon and Taapsee Pannu.

Lakshya: You can watch this Farhan Akhtar's film on Amazon Prime Video. The movie has been on our minds and hearts for its amazing songs and unique storyline. Starring Hrithik Roshan, Preity Zinta, Amitabh Bachchan, Om Puri, Sharad Kapoor, Sushant Singh and Boman Irani, this movie is a fictionalised Hindi war drama. The film is set in the backdrop of the 1999 Kargil War.

Bhaag Milkha Bhaag: The film is one of the finest gems in the Indian film industry. It is currently streaming on Disney+Hotstar. Starring Farhan Akhtar, Sonam Kapoor and Divya Dutta in lead roles. The movie is directed by Rakesh Omprakash Mehra.  Bhaag Milkha Bhaag is based on the life of Indian track and field sprinter Milkha Singh aka The Flying Sikh. 

Chak De! India: One of Shah Rukh Khan's best films currently running on Amazon Prime Video. The film can make you smile, laugh and cry. Not just that it will kindle the patriotic zeal within you at the same time. The movie's soundtrack is motivational to make us stand up and fight hard to fulfil our dreams.  The film is directed by Shimit Amin, the film stars Shah Rukh Khan, Vidya Malavade, Shilpa Shukla, Sagarika Ghatge, and Chitranshi Rawat, among others. 

Uri: The Surgical Strike: Vicky Kaushal's war film is a must-watch this Independence Day weekend. The film is based on the surgical strike that the Indian Army carried out on suspected militants who had attacked an army base in 2016. You can watch it on Amazon Prime Video.

Border: How can we miss this masterpiece from JP Dutta. Border is one of the greatest war dramas based on the Indian armed forces till now. The film is an adaptation of real-life events in the battle of Longewala during the Indo-Pak war in 1971. With chest-thumping, inspirational dialogues and emotional songs, Border is a complete package and can be watched repeatedly.

Kesari: The film is based on the battle of Saragarhi in 1897. Featuring Akshay Kumar and Parineeti Chopra, the movie narrates the story of Havildar Ishar Singh, who leads 21 Sikh soldiers against thousands of Pashtun invaders. You can watch Kesari on Amazon Prime Video.
