Using elections to drive home green message

Election 2016 green mission in Wayanad

New voters and veteran electors returned from the polling stations of Wayanad with a green-gift presented by the district administration- a tree sapling!

Wayanad district Collector Kesavendrakumar said they plan to distribute at least one million seedlings among voters under the programme 'Orma Maram.'

The administration's plan was to provide saplings of traditional fruit bearing, flowering trees and bamboo to select voters. Apart from first-time voters, physically challenged and senior citizens received saplings.

The administration had identified 47 areas which register low voting percentage and distribution of seedlings to increase voter turn-out.  It seems the plan worked, given the high polling rate in the district.

"Wayanad is classified as one of the climate change hot spots. The programme aims to create awareness among voters on the need for forest conservation besides the significance of exercising of the franchise," the collector said.
