Spiritual leader Sadhguru has appealed to parties in Tamil Nadu to free temples in the state from government clutches.

Sadhguru urged both the ruling All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam Chief Minister Edappadi Palaniswami and the Opposition Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam leader MK Stalin to incorporate his appeal in their party manifestos.

In his letter to both the party leaders, Sadhguru cited the eroding sanctity of temples under state control in Tamil Nadu.

Sadhguru cited the data submitted by the Hindu Religious & Charitable Endowments department recently submitted to the Madras High Court which noted that 11,999 temples have no revenue to perform even one daily prayer, 34,093 temples are struggling with less than Rs 10,000 as annual income, and of 44,121 temples under the HR&CE control in Tamil Nadu, more than 37,000 do not get enough revenue to appoint more than one person who has to carry out all tasks including priestly and caretaker duties.

Asserting that temple construction and restoration is not just an art, Sadhguru underlined in the hands of the lowest bidding contractors, ancient Temple architecture, murals and inscriptions are being irretrievably destroyed.

"We cannot preside over decades of neglect and apathy. Amounts to spiritual suicide for the community," he said.

UNESCO findings have cited gross violation of rules and shocking scenes of demolition and massacre of historic temples in Tamil Nadu.
