Chennai: The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) on Sunday formalised the agreement with ally Congress for Tamil Nadu Assembly election 2021.

The DMK allotted 25 assembly seats to Congress and the Lok Sabha bypoll seat in Kanyakumari, which fell vacant after the death of Congress MP H Vasanthakumar who passed away due to Covid-19 last year.

An agreement was signed between DMK chief MK Stalin and Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC) chief KS Alagiri on Sunday morning.

AICC general secretary in-charge Dinesh Gundu Rao, Congress legislature party leader KR Ramasamy and DMK women's wing secretary Kanimozhi were present.

"The DMK and the Congress have sealed seat-sharing deal. The Congress will contest in 25 assembly seats and the Kanyakumari Lok Sabha seat. Both cadre will now work together. We will win big. Congress, DMK, Left, VCK will sweep these elections,” Dinesh Gundu Rao said after Sunday's meeting.

"This election is more about the need to strengthen the secular plank more than the number of seats. To prevent the spread of the BJP, which is more dangerous than the coronavirus, all secular parties had to join hands with the single aim of defeating the BJP and its allies, " Alagiri told reporters after signing the deal.

The seat-sharing arrangement was finalised just ahead of the DMK's grand rally scheduled for today. Stalin will release the party's 10-year vision document at the rally.

The Congress share for the assembly election is a significant climbdown from the 41 seats it contested in the 2016 polls. It had won just eight then.
