Hathras (UP): Bhim Army chief Chandrashekhar Azad visited the family of Hathras gang-rape victim on Sunday and demanded that ‘Y’ security cover be provided to them.

“I demand ‘Y security’ for the family or I’ll take them to my house, they aren’t safe here. We want an inquiry to be done under the supervision of a retired Supreme Court judge”, he said.

Azad marched to meet the family of the Dalit woman as his car was stopped around 20 km before the district.

This came a day after former Congress president Rahul Gandhi and party General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra met the members of the woman’s family.

“If ‘Y Plus’ category security cover can be provided to actor Kangana Ranaut, then why can it not be provided to the family of the victim?,” he said, adding that if his demands are not met, he will ‘gherao’ the Vidhan Sabha.

Chief Minister Adityanath, meanwhile, recommended the Central Bureau of Investigation take over the case, after protests around the country over the way in which the case has been managed so far. The administration has denied it was caste-based crime – four upper caste Thakur men allegedly raped her – and has even denied the woman was raped, based on swab samples taken several days after the crime.

On September 14, a 19-year-old woman from the village was allegedly gangraped by four accused. The girl was first admitted to JN medical college in Aligarh but was shifted to Safdarjung hospital in Delhi last Monday (September 28) as her condition deteriorated. However, she could not be saved and breathed her last on Tuesday morning (September 29) at the hospital. All four accused in the incident have been arrested.
