On Monday, England fought back but succumbed against India on Day 5 of the fourth Test at The Oval in London. The Indian bowlers displayed an unusual show to register a 157-run win and regain the lead (2-1) in the five-Test series.

India was put to bat first, as it managed 191, while England overpowered it, scoring 291. In the second innings, India managed 466, handing England a target of 368, while the latter was 77/0 at stumps on Day 4.

Resuming at the overnight score, openers Rory Burns and Haseeb Hameed began from right where they left off. Contributing to a 100-run stand, Burns was dismissed right after scoring his 11th Test half-century, as pacer Shardul Thakur forced him to edge behind to wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant.

Twenty runs later, Dawid Malan fell for a mere five off an unfortunate run out. In the meantime, Hameed scored his fourth Test 50 but was handed a lifeline after being dropped on 55 by Mohammed Siraj. Along with skipper Joe Root, he has managed to bat out until the lunch break, with England at 131/2 and needing 237 more to win.

The post-lunch session was all about India, as just ten runs later, Hameed departed for 63 to spinner Ravindra Jadeja, who bowled him over. It lost three more wickets in the subsequent six runs (Ollie Pope- 2, Jonny Bairstow- 0 and Moeen Ali- 0), as India was thoroughly back in the game.

Evidently, under pressure, Root had the gave task at hand to save the Test. However, at 182, Thakur forced him to play onto his stumps for 36, thus breaking the backbone of English batting.

Just 11 runs later, Chris Woakes departed for 18 after handing a simple catch to KL Rahul at short leg off pacer Umesh Yadav. It was then the tea break kicked in, with England reeling at 193/8 and needing 175 runs more, while the Indians went into the dressing room, oozing in confidence.

As the players walked out in the post-tea session, it was only a matter of time before India got the job done. It was nine runs later when Craig Overton was knocked over for ten by Yadav in a painful manner as the ball struck his backhand elbow before crashing onto the stumps.

As James Anderson came in, he could barely do much, as at 210, he softly knicked it behind to Pant off Yadav for just a couple, as India completed the win. It was a 157-run victory and a 2-1 lead in the series, with things to be settled at Old Trafford in Manchester from Friday.

For India, five bowlers were utilised. While Yadav was the one to attain the most success in this innings, pacer Jasprit Bumrah nailed it with his economy.
