The 2021 edition of the gainful Indian Premier League would be the 14th season of the most decadent Twenty20 League globally. Just like every other season, the upcoming seasons promises to be a thriller as well.

Meanwhile, IPL is also famous for introducing and experimenting with new rules, which could become a point of discussion in international cricket in the future. Similarly, the forthcoming season would again witness some new rules in place, including one at the umpiring level.

According to a report by Sportstar, the controversial ‘soft signal’ would not be a part of the tournament this season. The IPL Governing Council discussed the same and has informed the same to the franchises after updating its Match Playing Conditions’ Appendix D - Clause 2.2.2.

The ‘soft signal’ involves the on-field umpires giving their verdict on a dismissal call while referring it to the third umpire. The television umpire then checks the same, who upon conclusive evidence either stays or overturns the on-field soft-signal. However, if the evidence is not convincing enough, the third umpire upholds the ‘soft signal’. Meanwhile, in the updated clause, the dismissal would be entirely reviewed by the tv umpire, with the freedom to make his call.

The signal has been a matter of controversy in international cricket of late, especially during India’s ongoing tour by England. “The soft signal becomes that important and it becomes tricky. Where there should be conclusive proof? I don’t know why there can’t be an ‘I don’t know’ call with the umpires as well. It is similar to umpire’s call as well. These are decisions that can change the course of the game, especially in these big games. We were on the receiving side today, and tomorrow it could be some other team,” Kohli had told PTI.

In other updates clauses, the short-run call (Clause 18.4.6), too, would be entirely made by the third umpire instead of the on-field umpires. Furthermore, according to Clause 12.7.1, the 20th over would be included in the 90 minutes of the Minimum Over-Rates system.

Moreover, Clause 16.3.1 suggests that subsequent Super-Overs can be played until an hour from the match tied for an uninterrupted game. Also, Clause 21.5.2 indicates that the tv umpire can overturn any no-ball call by the on-field umpire.
