Former champion Chennai Super Kings produced a dominating show with the bat to rattle fellow former champion Sunrisers Hyderabad by seven wickets in Match 23 of the Indian Premier League 2021 at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi on Wednesday. While skipper David Warner (57) and Manish Pandey (61) played brilliant innings each to help SRH post a dominant total, it was Ruturaj Gaikwad (75) and Faf du Plessis (56) for CSK who outplayed the SRH bowlers.

Winning the toss, Warner elected to bat first, as he made a couple of changes, bringing in Pandey and Sandeep Sharma for Abhishek Sharma and Virat Singh. As for CSK skipper MS Dhoni, he too made two changes, with Lungi Nigdi and Moeen Ali replacing Dwayne Bravo and Imran Tahir.

SRH was off to a shaky start, losing wicketkeeper-batsman Jonny Bairstow for just seven to pacer Sam Curran in the fourth over. However, it was then the pair of Warner and Pandey, who played composed but smart cricket to steer the SRH innings gradually.

During this phase, Pandya brought up his 20th IPL half-century, followed by Warner's 50th 50 of the tournament. The two contributed to an impressive 106-run stand for the second wicket.

Meanwhile, in the 18th over, Warner was dismissed for 57 by pacer Ngidi. He was quickly followed by Pandey for 61 in the same over, as the score read 134/3. Kane Williamson and all-rounder Kedar Jadhav managed to add 36 more, as SRH finished on a good total of 171/3.

As for CSK, six bowlers were pressed into the attack. While Ngidi got the most wickets, pacer Deepak Chahar was the most economical of all.

When CSK came out for the chase, it was sheer dominance from the openers, who played with a similar approach like Warner-Pandey right from the start. While they maintained the required rate, the two scored their respective half-centuries in the process (fifth for Gaikwad and 19th for du Plessis).

With SRH seemingly running out of bowling options, Warner had no choice but to bring back its trusted spinner Rashid Khan in the 13th over. The move eventually paid off as he ended the whopping 129-run stand between the two and got rid of Gaikwad by cleaning him up.

Out came Moeen and contributed 19 runs along with du Plessis before falling for 15 to Rashid again in the 15th over. He was followed by du Plessis off the very next delivery in the same over, as Rashid trapped him leg-before for 56. Nevertheless, it was the final pair of all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja and Suresh Raina who saw CSK through, thus sealing a seven-wicket win with nine balls to spare.

For SRH, it utilised five bowlers. As Rashid was the most effective in taking wickets, pacer Sandeep was the most economical.
Brief scores: SRH 171/3 (Warner- 57, Pandey- 61; Ngidi- 2/35) lost to CSK 173/3 in 18.3 overs (Gaikwad- 75, Du Plessis- 56; Rashid- 3/36) by seven wickets.
