Former champion Chennai Super Kings came up with an all-round to outplay Royal Challengers Bangalore by 69 runs in Match 19 of the Indian Premier League 2021 at the Wankhede Stadium, in Mumbai, on Sunday. With this, CSK has brought RCB's four-game winning streak to an end, with the latter suffering its opening loss of the season, thanks to all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja's rich performance tonight.

Winning the toss, CSK skipper MS Dhoni opted to bat first, as he made a couple of changes, bringing in Dwayne Bravo and Imran Tahir for Moeen Ali and Lungi Ngidi. As for RCB, skipper Virat Kohli too, made a couple of changes, with Daniel Christian and Navdeep Saini coming in for Kane Richardson and Shahbaz Ahmed.

The CSK openers, Ruturaj Gaikwad and Faf du Plessis, were off to a marvellous start, putting up a 74-run stand. It was not until the tenth over when RCB got the first breakthrough, getting rid of the former for 33, who fell to leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal.

It was then followed by a 37-run stand for the second wicket between du Plessis and Suresh Raina, while the former scored his 18th IPL half-century during this phase. In the 14th over, off pacer Harshal Patel, both the batsmen were dismissed in successive deliveries, for 50 and 24, respectively.

As a couple of new batsmen, Ambati Rayudu and all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja, came onto the middle, it saw a 32-run stand before Harshal got rid of the former for just 14 in the 18th over. Nonetheless, it was followed by a blazing 49-run stand between Jadeja and Dhoni. The former slammed record-equalling 37 runs in the final over of Harshal, scoring his second IPL 50 and handing a mammoth target of 192 to RCB.

For RCB, as many as seven bowlers were put into the attack. WhileHarshal was the most effective of all, Christian was the most economical.

As RCB came out for the chase, it was going at a decent run rate, despite losing a couple of overs within the powerplay, as the score read 65/2 after six overs, with opener Devdutt Padikkal being the top-scorer (34). However, it could hardly built any partnerships thereon.

It lost six further wickets within the subsequent 40 runs, as it was reeling at 94/8 by the 14th over, with all-rounder Glen Maxwell top-scoring 22 during this phase. Although Kyle Jamieson tried his best to steer his innings, he was unfortunately run out for 16 in the 16th over, at 103. While the final pair of Chahal and Siraj managed to add 19 runs, it was to no avail, as RCB succumbed to a 69-run defeat.

As for CSK, six bowlers were utilised. While Jadeja had the most success, pacer Shardul Thakur was highly economical.
Brief scores: CSK 191/4 (Du Plessis- 50, Jadeja- 62; Harshal- 3/51) defeats RCB 122/9 (Padikkal- 34; Jadeja- 3/13) by 69 runs.
