T20 World Cup 2021, Windies vs Bangladesh (Super 12): WI edges out by 3 runs to virtually end BAN's chances

Bangladesh has been virtually knocked out of the ICC T20 World Cup 2021 following a close three-run loss to the Windies. Meanwhile, it was the latter's first win of the tournament.

Defending champion Windies kept its chances of semis qualification alive after edging out Bangladesh by three runs in Group 1's Super 12 clash of the 2021 ICC T20 World Cup at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium on Friday. Windies has registered its opening win of the tournament with this win, while Bangladesh has been virtually knocked out.

Winning the toss, Bangladesh skipper MahMudullah opted to bowl, while he made a couple of changes, bringing in Soumya Sarkar and Taskin Ahmed for Nurul Hasan and Nasum Ahmed. As for the Windies, captain Kieron Pollard too, made two changes, bringing in Roston Chase and Jason Holder for Lendl Simmons and Hayden Walsh.

Although veteran Chris Gayle (4) was promoted as an opener for this game, Windies could not capitalise, losing him and Evin Lewis (6) within the fifth over of the Powerplay, with just 18 runs on the board. 14 runs later, Shimron Hetmyer (9) fell to spinner Mahedi Hasan in the seventh over. Meanwhile, in the 13th, Pollard (14*) walked back, retired hurt at eight, while the next delivery saw Andre Russell run out for a diamond duck at 62.

A 57-run partnership ensued between Roston Chase (39) and Nicholas Pooran (40) before both fell to Shoriful Islam in the 19th at the same score. As Pollard returned to the crease, at 123, Dwayne Bravo (1) departed to pacer Mustafizur Rahman in the final over, while Windies finished at a par total of 142/7.

Bangladesh put in five bowlers, with Mahedi, Rahman and Shoriful claiming a couple, while Taskin was the most economical of all. In reply, it promoted Shakib Al Hasan (9) as an opener but lost him and fellow opener Mohammad Naim (17) by the sixth over of the PP, with 29 runs on the board.

However, a 31-run stand followed between Liton Das (44) and Soumya Sarkar (17) before the latter was dismissed by Akeal Hosein in the 11th, while at 90, Mushfiqur Rahim (8) was bowled up by pacer Ravi Rampaul in the 14th. Despite Windies getting regular breakthroughs, Bangladesh managed to come up with some promising stands.

Mahmudullah (31) put up a 40-run partnership with Liton before the latter fell to pacer Bravo in the 19th. However, the Windies bowlers successfully suppressed the flow of the runs. As the equation came down to 13 off the final six, pacer Russell managed to give away nine, as Windies trumped by just three runs.

The Windies utilised five bowlers, claiming a wicket each, while Holder happened to be the most economical one.
Brief scores: Windies 142/7 (Chase- 39, Pooran- 40; Shoriful- 2/20) lost to Bangladesh 139/5 (Liton- 44, Mahmudulla- 31; Holder- 1/22) by three runs.
