The new strain of Coronavirus that originated in the United Kingdom has triggered apprehensions about a new wave of infections. Here's a quick update from Dr Raghavendra M K, Consultant Pulmonologist at the Manipal Hospitals in Jayanagar, Bengaluru on the new strain of the virus  

With the emergence of a new mutant coronavirus strain in the UK, the samples of the passenger have now been sent to NIV Pune to identify the strain of the virus.

Two passengers who came from Britain to Kolkata last week have been tested positive for COVID-19. After the reports came, the character of the virus was found genetically a little different. It has been decided to send the saliva samples of the two passengers to the Pune Virology Center.

After passengers from Delhi showed new Covid-19 symptoms, reports of Tamil Nadu native testing positive have rattled Southern states. The passenger returning from Britain, arrived at Delhi before boarding the Chennai flight. The samples have been sent to NIV Pune to check whether it has any links with the new Covid-19 strain.  

After the UK government announced the new coronavirus strain and banned flight operations, Karnataka felt the ripple effect after 138 passengers landed without Covid negative certificates and necessary tests at the airport.

The new strain of Coronavirus has triggered fresh wave of anxiety and fresh cases in United Kingdom and beyond. A week since it was first identified, the new strain is already responsible for 60 percent of the cases in the country.

West Bengal reports new 1,978 COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours. However, the recovery rate neared 95% in the state. According to the state health bulletin, 40 people died in a single day taking the death toll to 9,360.
