The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has advised Americans against travelling to India following the surge in Covid-19 cases across the country.

A travel advisory issued by the CDC noted that due to the current situation in India, even fully-vaccinated travellers may be at risk for getting and spreading Covid-19 variants and should avoid all travel to India.

The health agency said that if anyone has to travel to India, then the individual should get fully vaccinated before travel.

"All travellers should wear a mask, stay 6 feet from others, avoid crowds, and wash their hands," the advisory said.

The CDC advisory came hours after the United Kingdom added India to the 'red list' of countries from where flying in is barred.

Addressing House of Commons on Monday, British Health Secretary Matt Hancock said that the vast majority of the cases of the new variant, the B.1.617, had been linked to international travel.

From 8:30 AM IST on April 23, all arrivals from India except for the UK or Irish nationals will be barred.

On Monday, Hong Kong too had suspended flight services from India after detecting a number of infected passengers on arrival.
