What Venkaiah Naidus exit means for TDP BJP alliance

With the exit of former Union Minister M. Venkaiah Naidu, there has been a shift in Bharatiya Janatha Party’s (BJP) stance in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. Naidu resigned from BJP to file his nominations for the Vice-President post.

Venkaiah Naidu for over a decade handled the Telugu states and now with his exit, BJP is looking at making radical changes in its policy towards  AP and Telangana.

Though BJP shares alliances with Telugu Desam Party (TDP) in Andhra and Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) in Telangana, the leaders in the state might now be looking at carving out a place for BJP. The recent elevation of BJP leaders who are openly against the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) chief Chandrababu Naidu is a sure sign towards that direction.

According to reports, Somu Veeraju another BJP leader from AP, who is anti- Chandrababu, is expected to be made president. During Venkaiah Naidu’s time, Veeraju was never elevated and had to make do with smaller roles.

Another opponent of Chandrababu, Ram Madhav is expected to be given charge BJP leadership in AP state. There are rumours that he is being considered for Rajya Sabha seat vacated by Venkaiah Naidu and might also find a place in the Central Cabinet.

Another key leader Daggupati Purandeswari, daughter of TDP founder NT Ramarao, is another of anti-Chandrababu leaders who will be given a major role in AP politics by BJP. She is expected to team up with Veeraju and Ram Madhav against Chandrababu. Purandeswari is also being considered as a Rajya Sabha member and may also be taken into the Cabinet.

The BJP in AP, till now was being restrained by Venkaiah Naidu but with exit, the BJP leaders in AP are expected to declare an open war.

Even when Venkaiah Naidu was in full support of Chandrababu, state BJP ministers had submitted reports to the National leadership against Chandrababu. They also had then demanded that BJP should contest separately in the State elections.

The anti-Chandrababu BJP team in the state for long have waited to act against the TDP chief, now with Venkaiah’s exit from AP, it now remains to be seen how BJP and TDP will sustain their alliance.
