Sultry weather: Chicken, vegetable prices sky rocket in Vizag

  • Price of poultry has peaked from ₹180 to ₹240
  • Veggies cost 30% higher in open market than in Rythu Bazar
  • Experts says the situation will continue till July
Chicken vegetable prices sky rocket in Vizag

The prices of vegetables which were stable till a few days ago have shot up as much as 30% to 50% while chicken prices have peaked from ₹180 to ₹240. The price of fish has also risen to ₹150, hit by low supply due to sultry and humid weather. 

The low yield of crops has affected the supply of vegetables resulting in an increase in its price. Leafy vegetables are the most hit with its prices breaching all previous highs. With the reduced supply, the price of vegetables in open markets in the city are more than 30% higher than in rythu bazaars. 

Leafy greens like mint leaves, coriander leaves and a few others have hit all time high while beans, spine gourd, ridge gourd, green peas, etc. have become out of reach. Capsicum, spine gourd and beans are selling at ₹55 per kg on the open market. Even the ridge gourd has touched ₹35 per kg. Only vegetables that are affordable are tomato and ladies finder which are still being sold at ₹15 a kg. 

People are suffering from soaring prices and non-availability of vegetables. As the birds and fish are perishing fast owing to humid and sultry weather, the price of meat and seafood too have gone high. Experts with horticulture and poultry said that the situation would continue for one more month and the prices will come down only by July.
