Ammonia gas leak 14 women hospitalised in Andhra Pradesh

All the women have been admitted to a government hospital at Kakinada in East Godavari district. The condition of two is stated to be critical. The gas leak took place at an aqua processing company Veerabhadra Exports known as VB exports on Friday, said police. All the workers were inside the unit when the pipeline carrying ammonia gas broke, police said.

Of the 30 most of the workers managed to come out of the company, 14 women who could not escape on time were affected by the gas leak. All the women are in the age group of 20 to 30 and were processing prawns for export, said police. The factory has been sealed after the incident, said police.

The incident took place at VB Exports around 11.30 am during the trial run of the new compressor. The staff was asked to test the new compressor with ammonia gas. However, without any safety tools the gas emitted was inhaled by the women workers.

The workers associations have accused the company of not giving safety tools to the women, before running the trial.
