PubliCity: BMTC bans single-use plastic: Commuters to be fined for littering, using plastic in bus stops?

The Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation has come out with a circular that states that single-use plastic will not be allowed it its premises. Initially, the BMTC will intensify awareness in bus depots and bus stops and later coordinate with the BBMP to spread the message to passengers.

If you think it is cool to sip tea or coffee or get a juice in plastic cups near BMTC bus depots and stops, you may end up being proved wrong. The BMTC has banned single-use plastic in its premises.

BMTC managing director C Shikha has sent a circular to all bus depots and division controllers demanding that they adhere to stricter implementation of the ban on single-use plastic. BBMP Commissioner, BH Anil Kumar also appreciated and welcomed this step from the BMTC .

However, activists have expressed doubt on the better implementation of this rule in BMTC premises as despite previous efforts by the BBMP, many shops and stalls still sell banned plastic items.
