Punjab Election 2022 Result: AAP bags 92 seats, wins with clear-majority

As per the Election Commission, Aam Aadmi Pary has bagged 92 seats and holds a majority in the 117-member assembly. The incumbent Congress will possibly settle for distant second with 18 seats.

Going back to a few weeks, in an interview, AAP leader and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal had said, "Channi will lose both the seats he is contesting. We are ready to give in writing". In his prediction, Kejriwal had said that AAP's chief ministerial candidate Bhagwant Mann would win from Dhuri by a margin of at least 51,000 votes.

This prediction has come true on Thursday. In Punjab Election 2022 results, Congress' Charanjit Singh Channi has lost both seats.

After receiving the certificate, Punjab Chief Minister-elect Bhagwant Mann paid obeisance at Gurdwara Sri Mastuana Sahib.

After sweeping the state of Punjab, the Aam Aadmi Party reshared its spoof video. Ealrier, the party released a parody film titled "Punjab's future CM is in the home". In the video, Charanjit Singh Channi and state Congress chief Navjot Singh Sidhu were also battling for the CM chair. However, the footage shows Mann warmly greeted by the "people of Punjab" and receiving the CM chair. Additionally, Arvind Kejriwal, the AAP's leader and Delhi Chief Minister, and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi both appear in the film.

Addressing the media, AAP leader and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said, “Everyone was united against AAP. The aim was to defeat the AAP. Captain Amarinder Singh sahab lost, Charanjit Singh Channi sahab lost, Badal sahab lost, Sidhu lost, Majithia lost. A wonder done by people of Punjab. This is Inquilab."

"Punjab waalo tussi kamaal kar ditta', we all love you, Punjab. The results are a massive 'inquilaab', big seats have shaken up," he added.

Punjab Congress chief Navjot Singh Sidhu loses from Amritsar East by a margin of 6,750 votes; while Shiromani Akali Dal's Bikram Singh Majithia loses from Amritsar East by a margin of 14,408 votes.

Taking to social media, Shiromani Akali Dal President Sukhbir Singh Badal wrote: "We whole-heartedly & with total humility accept the mandate".

"We will continue to serve them with humility in the role they have assigned to us," he added.

Bhagwant Mann stated that his government's first priority will be to solve the issue of unemployment. "We will make sure that young people do not have to travel overseas... You will notice improvements within a month," Mann stated in his victory address.

After sweeping the Punjab elections, AAP CM candidate Bhagwant Mann took a shot at the opposition leaders, saying, "The Bade Badal has lost, Sukhbir Badal has lost from Jalalabad, Captain Amarinder Singh Sahab has also been defeated. Majithia is likewise struggling. Channi has also been defeated in both seats."

AAP CM candidate Bhagwant Mann addressed the party workers, supporters in Sangrur. He was accompanied by mother Harpal Kaur and shared an emotional moment as they greeted the party workers and supporters.

Apart from Congress, Captain Amarinder Singh has also "accepted the verdict of the people with all humility". Taking to Twitter, he said: "Democracy has triumphed. Punjabis have shown true spirit of Punjabiyat by rising and voting above sectarian and caste lines."

He also congratulated the AAP and Bhagwant Mann.

According to official Election Commission trends, Punjab CM Charanjit Singh Channi trails in Bhadaur (by 22,843 votes) and Chamkaur Sahib (by 2671 votes).

Taking to Twitter, Aam Aadmi Party shared a clip from the "Chak De India", where the team India wins the World Clip. While sharing the clip, the party wrote: "AAP family right now."

The Congress party has conceded its defeat in the Punjab assembly elections. Taking to Twitter, State party president Navjot Singh Sidhu said, "The voice of the people is the voice of God... Humbly accept the mandate of the people of Punjab ... Congratulations to AAP."

Former Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh has lost election from his Patiala Urban seat by 13,000 votes. The two-time Chief Minister was defeated by Ajit Pal Singh Kohli of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).

Amarinder Singh formed his own party, the Punjab Lok Congress, following a schism with the Congress following his dismissal as Chief Minister in September.

As the trends show that AAP is leading on more than 80 seats, party convenor Arvind Kejriwal took to Twiiter and shared a photo with CM candidate Bhagwant Mann. He wrote: "Many congratulations to the people of Punjab for this revolution".

Celebrations have begun in the state, with trends from the Assembly polls indicating that the AAP has crossed the halfway point in Punjab. Workers from the AAP were spotted dancing with brooms in their hands. The AAP's electoral symbol is a broom.

As the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) raced to its second state after Delhi, Raghav Chaddha, the party's leader, declared that AAP will replace the Congress as the country's largest opposition party.

Aam Aadmi Party is heading for a clear majority in Punjab as the party is leading in 88 seats (at 10.30 am). Congress which is the second largest party, according to the latest trends, is leading on 13 seats. With the AAP inching towards the victory, Bhagwant Mann is set to become the next CM in Punjab.

In a major setback for Congress' Navjot Singh Sindhu and Charanjit Singh Channi, and Captain Amarinder Singh, all the three leaders are trailing from their respective seats.

The trends show that Aam Aadmi Party will be dethroning the Congress in Punjab Assembly elections 2022, giving the party its second state within 10 years of its creation. 

Though, the exit polls show that the people of Punjab largely supported the jodi of Arvind Kejriwal and Bhagwant Mann. They have agreed to and recognised Kejriwal's governance concept. And the state of Punjab, which desired change, overthrew the old political parties – the Akali Dal with the Congress – in favour of a new political start-up – AAP and its tried-and-tested Delhi model.

The trends reveal that people are frustrated of the state's major political parties, the BJP and Congress, failing to govern the state for a long period. They want a model that includes free energy, free water, world-class education, and cutting-edge health infrastructure in the form of mohalla clinics.

Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi and his family prayed in Chamkaur Sahib Gurudwara on Thursday ahead of the election results. Though the exit polls indicate that Aam Aadmi Party might form the government, earlier the current CM Charanjit Singh Channi, speaking to the media, said the sealed EVMs would reveal what is going to happen. The initial trends shows AAP is on its way to form their government and dethrone Congress from its position.

The initial trends show that Aam Aadmi Party has taken the lead and Congress is on the second spot.

Bhagwant Mann, AAP leader and CM candidate for the party, paid a visit at Sangrur's Gurdwara Gursagar Mastuana Sahib, ahead of the counting. Speaking to the media, he said, "We are hopeful that the people of Punjab voted for change".

As the exit polls indicate that the Aam Aadmi Party will be the single largest party in Punjab, and the party's CM candidate, Bhagwant Mann, was optimistic of capturing more than 80 seats.

Earlier on exit poll day, Mann told the media that the people's mandate for who would hold the reins of their children, youth, and elders for the next five years is sealed in the EVM machines. He stated that the results will be released on Mach 10, and that they would recognise the mandate of the people.

In 2017 Assembly elections, the Congress Party was led by Captain Amarinder Singh and stormed to victory with a strong majority. The Akali-BJP administration was deposed as a result of strong anti-incumbency and major corruption accusations. For the first time, AAP entered the Punjab election and garnered more than 20 per cent of the vote.

This year, since the outset, the political war has become increasingly bipolar, and as exit polls indicate, it is shaping out to be a two-party contest, with the AAP and Congress playing crucial roles. According to most exit polls, the AAP would win the state by a landslide, capturing 70-90 seats in the 117-member Assembly. The Congress Party is expected to fare poorly, while the BJP and Akali Dal are expected to be flogged by voters for neglecting farmers' misery during agricultural protests.

The results of the Punjab assembly election is avidly awaited by the Congress high leadership. This is because most pollsters projected that Arvind Kejriwal's Aam Aadmi Party would replace Charanjit Singh Channi's cabinet. Following major internal infighting, the Congress attempted to repair its image in the state by playing the Dalit card and appointing Channi as chief minister.

Voting will take place at 117 polling stations spread across 66 cities, with a three-tiered security system in place. The Election Commission has stationed 45 companies of the Central Armed Police Forces at each of the 117 polling places.

Punjab had the lowest voter participation of any state, at 71.95 percent, when compared to the three previous assembly elections.
