Sukmawati Soekarnoputri, daughter of ex-Indonesian Prez Soekarno, converts from Islam to Hindu

FollowDiah Mutiara Sukmawati Soekarnoputri, also known as Sukmawati Soekarnoputri, has proclaimed her conversion from Islam to Hinduism. Sukmawati is the daughter of Indonesia's third wife, Fatmawati, and Indonesia's first president, Soekarno. Sukmawati is Megawati Soekarnoputri, Indonesia's fifth President.
Her late Balinese grandmother, Ida Ayu Nyoman Rai Srimben, impacted the 69-year-old founder of the Indonesian National Party (Partai Nasional Indonesia-PNI) decision to embrace Hinduism. Sudhi Wadani, a ceremonial Hindu ceremony recognising Sukmawati's conversion to Hinduism, will be conducted on Tuesday, October 26, 2021, at Bali Agung Singaraja, a memorial to her late Father constructed near her grandmother's house in North Bali. Sukmawati's 70th birthday falls on the same day as the conversion ceremony.
Witaryono Rejsoprojo, Sukmawati's lawyer, alerted the press about the religious transition. Witaryono also stated that his client has studied extensively and is well-versed in Hindu doctrine. The lawyer could not respond to media inquiries about whether Sukmawati would want to live permanently in Bali following her formal conversion. Over the last 19 years, the lawyer described how he had followed Sukmawati Soekarnoputri to several events hosted by the PNI and The Soekarno Center. Sukmawati frequently attended Hindu religious rites and had lengthy talks with Hindu spiritual luminaries during previous travels to Bali.

According to several media sources, Sukamawati's aspirations to convert to Hinduism have been approved by her brothers and sister - former president Megawati Soekarnoputri, Guntur Soekarnoputra, and Guruh Soekarnoputra. Her children, Prince Haryo Paundrajarna Sumautra Jiwanegara, Gusti Raden Ayu Putri Siniwati, and Muhammad Putra Perwira Utama, have also approved and accepted the conversion.
