Karnataka by-election: Congress rout claims first wicket, Siddaramaiah resigns from post

After staggering defeat in the Karnataka bypolls, Siddaramaiah resigned from his post of leader of opposition and Congress Legislative Party chief

Bengaluru: The staggering defeat in the Karnataka bypolls has taken a toll on the Congress with its Congress Legislative Party (CLP) chief Siddaramaiah quitting from his post. However, Ahmed Patel, political secretary to AICC chief Sonia Gandhi has not accepted it. “As a leader of the legislative party, I need to respect democracy. I have resigned as Congress Legislative Party leader. I have submitted my resignation to Sonia Gandhi Ji,” said Saiddaramaiah.

BJP needed six seats to stay afloat in Karnataka but made a sweep bagging 12 out of the 15 seats. The Congress won only two seats while an independent won one. Reports are also rife that Karnataka Congress president Dinesh Gundu Rao might tender his resignation.
