Three unidentified terrorists affiliated with proscribed terror outfit Jaish-E-Muhammad (JeM) were gunned down in an encounter between security officials and terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir's Tral area.

Police said the identity of the terrorists could not be immediately ascertained, and that search operations are still underway in the area.

"TralEncounterUpdate: 03 unidentified #terrorist affiliated with proscribed #terror outfit JeM killed. #Search going on. Further details shall follow," the J-K police said in a tweet.

Officials said earlier in the day that the encounter started in the upper reaches of a forested area of Nagbaeran in Tral in Awantipora.

This is the second joint operation between the Army and the police in Tral in the past 24 hours, and third since Thursday.

In a similar encounter in Awantipora, two terrorists were neutralized by security officials on Friday. They were part of a hit squad involved in the murders of civilians in south Kashmir, the police said.

Inspector general of Police, Vijay Kumar on Friday said that one of the two terrorists killed in the Awantipora encounter were involved in killing a peon at a government school on July 23.

Also on Thursday, terrorists barged into a political worker with the Jammu-Kashmir Apni party Ghulam Hassan Lone’s house, and shot him dead.
