Syed Ali Geelani and the story of Pakistan's hypocrisy

The fact that a Kashmiri separatist deserves much more respect and honour from the Pakistani establishment than a deceased former President speaks volumes of the mindset of the leadership in Islamabad.

Pakistan's duplicitous nature was once again on full display as it went all out to glorify the demise of hardline separatist Syed Ali Geelani.

Right from Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan to Army Chief Qamar Bajwa and prominent Cabinet ministers extolled the virtues of the pro-Pakistan separatist who throughout his political career opposed holding any sort of a dialogue with the Indian government on Kashmir.

However, the fact that this so-called outpouring of grief from Islamabad was just a facade to tarnish India globally is evident from the Pakistan government utter disdain in honouring its late president Mamnoon Hussain who passed away on July 14 this year.

To recall, Mamnoon was president of Pakistan from 2013 to 2018. In a country that is notorious for only military dictators becoming long term presidents, the fact that a civilian could manage a full tenure as Head of State was in many ways a landmark feat.

However, the way the Imran Khan-led government treated a former President of the country is worth mentioning.

While Imran Khan announced a day of national mourning for a Kashmiri separatist, his government did not show similar gesture for its former President.

Not just that, no serving minister attended Mamnoon Hussain's last rites.

Many believe the reason for Imran Khan-led dispensation's indifference towards Mamnoon Hussain could be the fact that before becoming the president of the country, he was a part of former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif's Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz.

Some also see the fact that Mamnoon Hussain was more liberal than the entire Pakistan administration put together. As President, Mamoon even extended Holi greetings to the minority Hindus in the country.

The terrible situation of minorities in Pakistan under the Imran Khan regime is well-documented.

But nevertheless, the fact that a Kashmiri separatist deserves much more respect and honour than a deceased former President speaks volumes of the mindset of the leadership in Islamabad.

And social media users were quick to remind Imran Khan of that:
