Kolkata: West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee kickstarted her poll campaign for the upcoming Bhabanipur bye-election by accusing the BJP of using central agencies to target Trinamool Congress leaders pursuing its "vendetta politics", as soon as the assembly bypoll dates were announced.

Addressing TMC supporters, Banerjee launched a blistering attack on the Narendra Modi-led government of unnecessarily harassing the people who raise questions on its governance.

Further hitting out at the BJP, she alleged that the saffron party is targeting party general secretary and her nephew Abhishek Banerjee for political reasons, claiming there is no valid case against him.

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) questioned Abhishek Banerjee for about nine hours in Delhi on Monday in a money laundering case linked to an alleged coal pilferage scam in West Bengal.

Mamata faced defeat against BJP's Suvendu Adhikari from the Nandigram seat in the Assembly elections held earlier this year. She needs to win the by-poll to continue as the Chief Minister.

“We only know how we fought against all odds to win the assembly polls. The BJP brought in goons from other states during the assembly elections. I had to contest this bypoll as a conspiracy was hatched against me (in Nandigram),” she said while addressing a workers’ meet here, news agency PTI reported.

Bhowanipore, along with Assembly seats of Shamshergunj and Jangipur, will go to the polls on September 30. The results of all the three bypolls would be announced on October 3.

The Congress on Tuesday took a U-turn over its stand and said the party will not pit anybody against the Trinamool Congress supremo.

The BJP said that it will announce the name of its candidate for Bhabanipur Assembly bye-election in a day or two.
