Lakhimpur Kheri violence: Priyanka Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi reach violence-hit district to meet victims’ families

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and AICC General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi, along with Chief Ministers Bhupesh Baghel and Charanjit Singh Channi reached Lakhimpur Kheri to meet the grieving families of the victims of the violence.

Speaking to reporters at the airport, Haryana CM Baghel and Punjab CM Channi announced Rs 50 lakh compensation from each of their governments to the kin of the farmers and the journalist who were killed in the Sunday incident.

Meanwhile, Lakhimpur Kheri DM Dr Arvind Kumar Chaurasiya said Wednesday evening, “We handed over cheques of Rs 45 lakh each to families of 2 deceased farmers yesterday. Families of 4 others will receive cheques today. Two deceased were from Bahraich and that is being looked into by Bahraich district administration.”

With political parties swarming to the violence-hit district, an Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) delegation today reached Lakhimpur Kheri to meet the families of farmers who lost their lives during a protest in the district Sunday. Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal also spoke to one affected family over phone and extended deepest condolences and assured all possible help.

The Congress workers led by Rajasthan party president Govind Singh Dotasra will march from the Nagla border of the Bharatpur district in Rajasthan to Lakhimpur Kheri in Uttar Pradesh on Thursday "to demand strict punishment for the killers," Rajasthan Congress stated in a tweet.

Violence erupted in Lakhimpur Kheri on Sunday which claimed at least eight lives, including four farmers. While the four farmers were killed after being allegedly mowed down by three SUVs from the convoy of Union MoS Home Ajay Mishra and his son Ashish, the remaining four - which included BJP workers and a driver - were later lynched by the angry farmers.
