Minister of State (Home) Ajay Mishra on Wednesday met Union Home Minister Amit Shah amid Opposition calling for his sacking over allegations that his son ran over farmers in Uttar Pradesh's Lakhimpur Kheri.

Mishra discussed the situation arising out of Sunday’ incident and the possible ways to tackle it for about 40 minutes, sources said.

Uttar Pradesh Police have registered a murder case against Ashish Mishra, the son of Ajay Kumar Mishra, and several others over the death of the farmers. However, no arrest has been made yet.

Opposition leaders and Bharatiya Kisan Union’s Rakesh Tikait have been demanding Mishra’s sacking and the arrest of his son.

Both he and his son Ashish Mishra have denied even being present at the spot, though the minister has admitted that the SUV belonged to him.

A video clip of an SUV mowing down farm protesters in Lakhimpur Kheri has raised the heat on the UP government.

The video was also shared on social media including by Varun Gandhi, an MP of the ruling BJP. The video is yet to be verified by the police.

Meanwhile, the Uttar Pradesh government Wednesday allowed Congress leaders Rahul, Priyanka Gandhi along with three others to visit Lakhimpur Kheri.

Rahul Gandhi and Chief Ministers Bhupesh Baghel and Charanjit Singh Channi left for Lucknow, from where they intend to go to Lakhimpur Kheri to meet the families of the victims of the violence. Before leaving, Gandhi said farmers were being “systematically attacked” in the country, and targeted the government for “insulting” them.

However, Rahul left for Sitapur from Lucknow airport after a brief standoff with cops.

“What kind of permission I have been granted by the UP government? These people are not letting me go out of the Lucknow airport,” Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said.
