Congress leader Navjot Singh Sidhu on Wednesday slammed the Uttar Pradesh Police and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for "unlawful detention" of party's general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and accused them of violating the “spirit of Constitution”.

“54 hours passed !! @priyankagandhi Ji has not been produced before any Court … unlawful detention beyond 24 hours is a clear violation of the fundamental rights. BJP & UP Police :- You are violating the spirit of the Constitution, impinging on our basic human rights !!,” Sidhu said in a tweet.

His remark came a day after he warned that the party's state unit would march towards Lakhimpur Kheri if Gandhi was not released, and Union minister Ajay Mishra's son not held in connection with the violence.

Meanwhile, on Wednesday Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi were given permission to visit Lakhimpur Kheri by the Uttar Pradesh government.

Priyanka Gandhi and 11 others were booked under sections 151 (arrest to prevent the commission of cognizable offences) and 107 (security for keeping the peace in other cases) and arrested on Tuesday.

Gandhi Vadra had claimed that she has been detained for the last 40 hours without any order or FIR.

In a statement, she said she has not been produced in front of a magistrate or any other judicial officer and neither has she been allowed to meet her legal counsel, who has been standing at the gate of the compound since morning.

Gandhi said that following a verbal statement by arresting officer DCP Piyush Kumar Singh, CO City, Sitapur, that she has been arrested under section 151, she hasn’t received any further communication, so far.

Navjot Singh Sidhu has threatened to lead a march to Lakhimpur Kheri if Priyanka Gandhi not released by today.

The Punjab Congress activists will walk towards Lakhimpur Kheri in Uttar Pradesh where violence erupted on Sunday, killing eight people, if Priyanka Gandhi is not released and the Union Minister's son accused of murder not arrested, said state party President Navjot Sidhu on Tuesday.
